One of two African elephant species, forest elephants roam in densely wooded rainforests. With more oval-shaped ears and straighter tusks, they are smaller than their counterparts, savanna elephants. They forage on leaves, seeds, fruit, and tree bark and are an essential part of the surrounding ecosystem. In fact, they are called the "gardeners of the forest," as they spread more than 90 species of plants that germinate only when passed through their digestive tract. Populations are difficult to determine and are often estimated through dung counts.
